Do you ever have occasional periods of bad shifting?

I'm trying to figure out if it's a lack of experience, or of it's just something that happens to everyone.

Every now and then I'll have periods of sloppy, jerky shifts. Letting off the clutch too quick, cutting throttle in too fast. It'll happen for a few days and after that it's continued smooth sailing.

Thinking about it makes me focus on it and probably prolongs my slump.

Nah bro. Perfect double clutch heel-toe powershifts every time here. :P. But yea, I get this too, a day or two, then it goes away. Strangeness.

Happens for so many reasons. I find I sometimes shift badly when the car is cold, but of course it could also be me that's cold. Most of the time it's when I'm impatient, so I just have to take a breath and pay attention.

Yes. This absolutely happens to me too! I have no idea what it's from either. Being impatient? Maybe. Car? Possibly. Who knows.

Most of my shifts are terrible, but I don't get to drive a manual enough to really figure it out, I guess.

Either I get super nervous and screw up or I get cocky and "har, har, this car looks easy to shift" and screw up even worse.

(So, uh, back to browsing cheap NBs and/or old 911s on Craigslist. Stef need manual car.)

Winter = bad shifting for a 200k mile car. I stall on occasion but I look at it as a reminder that my clutch is still in one piece.

I feel like if I stop focusing in it, it goes away. But that's really hard to do. Especially if I'm giving someone a ride.

This happens to me also, until I've been driving for quite some time and it finally warms up...

Yes, which is why I try not to drive my Carrera hungover/sleep deprived.

Yeah. I have wondered about it too. I'll have periods where every shift is buttery smooth, and then some where I stay on the clutch too long or don't transition smooth enough.

Yes, but it's usually because my FR-S ecu has been reset and the god damn fucking throttle by wire has to re-learn the min and max throttle positions.

Basically it means i either stall or over rev because my throttle takes about an extra half inch of travel than I am expecting

Sometimes I get single shifts wrong, usually caused by lack of concentration or no reason for shifting at all. Not really periods, but sometimes getting into a new car can be interesting for the first 5 minutes.

Yep. It usually happens with someone else in the car. I also have a hard time getting used to different cars clutch and tranny interaction but generally after a few shifts I get it down. But I shift terribly if I'm feeling lazy and don't care or just lose concentration.

Yeah. Having driven my wife's car (auto with paddles) has affected my shifting when I get back in my Forester (manual), at least for first couple of miles of travel.

My first year of driving was like that. Especially with other people in the car. I had to stop concentrating so much on the shifting and just naturally do it, like you said. Now I only have the occasional missed gear or bad clutch uptake.

Once is just too much.. High RPM 2nd gear shift, foot and arm was not in sync... Such a loud and shrill metallic sound and the entire gearbox felt like it vomited. I tried to step the clutch in as fast as I could.
As an 18 year old with a car I love (88 325ix) my as clenched so quickly. Thankfully the gearbox was all warmed up so I like to think it didn't get too badly hurt, but for the rest of the trip I felt like it kept making funny noises. I vowed to focus on that syncing of body parts to prevent that from ever happening again..

Everyone has a bad shifting day every once in a while. Some people lie and claim they don't.

YES! It's always when I've got someone riding shotgun and I'm trying to shift super smooth for their sake.

Yeah, from time to time. Mostly it gets pretty notchy, but that could be the gearbox, too.
